Declared a National Disaster, the Covid-19 pandemic has rendered us helpless and desperate. All of us, worldwide, have been affected by this disaster for most of this year; however, we are getting used to the 'new normal'. In this case, different strata of the society have reacted distinctively because of their geographical, logistical, and financial rationale. During these trying times, numerous COVID relief services by the Government, NGOs, corporate organizations, etc., have also helped many underprivileged communities with basic amenities like food, water, medicines, and masks, sanitizers, and more.
Among them, Save the Children - India's leading NGO immediately responded to the situation by providing support, including medical and other vital supplies, and emergency response training to the most vulnerable areas and communities impacted by the coronavirus. Save the Children continues to distribute hygiene supplies and spread important health information and awareness on how to stay safe and prevent the spread of infection. With its presence in Mumbai, Save the Children's on-ground teams have been effectively reaching out to affected families and children across the state, especially the vulnerable. Their consistent agenda has been to reach the children and families living in poverty. These downtrodden sections of the community live in homes that accommodate many people; therefore, social distancing is not a possibility. Adding to this logistical issue is the issue of finances and other problems that catapulted because of depleting finances. These are people who have been the worst affected and are in need of urgent support and aid. Sadly, the aforementioned issues are only the tip of the iceberg. Providing COVID relief services, this NGO in Mumbai has undertaken several activities to ensure a fair continuation of the vulnerable communities' daily lives. So far, around 3000 families have been reached out to with relief items and supplements, food materials, and hygiene kits. Save the Children has also been distributing food kits, hygiene kits, learning kits, and spreading awareness about Health & WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services. Numerous WASH messages, along with precautionary and preventive messages, are being shared across the country. While this NGO in Mumbai has helped and served communities through these desperate times of crisis through COVID relief services, many children and young people have also emerged as real heroes of change. Save the Children has proven themselves repeatedly through many such emergencies since 2008, and proudly continues to do so on the front line. We must remember - we're in this together.

India has been attempting to banish the evil of child marriage since 1929 under the Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 of the British India Legislature. We're close to a century now, but we still hear a swelling number of cases being reported! Even though in UNICEFs 2018 report, a decrease was noticed in the overall statistics, the National Crime Records Bureau recorded more than 326 incidents of child marriage in India. Despite the enactment of the Child Marriage Act of 2006; on one hand, we struggle to keep the numbers of child marriages in check, and on the other, we are faced with compromised reporting of child marriages because of lack of birth certificates.
Girls are highly likely to be affected by child marriages, and it could result in many disastrous situations like early pregnancy and death, sexual abuse, increased risk for sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer, etc. The offspring is also at an increased risk of premature birth and death as neonates, infants, or children. Girls marrying early are further predisposed to domestic violence, poor mental health, and undernourishment. They are also more likely to have limited access to contraception, health, and medical care. Efforts need to be mobilized towards the equal dissemination of education among both genders in rural, remote and tribal regions, where education and employability explicitly for girls are complicated to access, which is why it is preferred to marry them off early. Education must also be designed to be relevant to all, but in its current structure, it is not capable of creating immediate economic benefits for tribal, underprivileged, and other poor communities. Desperation for immediate economic benefit and its linkage to dowry also forces parents of both boys and girls to marry their children early. Globalization has contributed to the general understanding and awareness of the child marriage act, but this is only the case of urban India, this social evil continues being pronounced in many tribal, rural and backward communities in India. Child marriages are not only a brutal act against children but also the society and the future generations of a nation! How can one be so myopic and not do anything about it, then? We need to dutifully put an end to this rampant act by doing our bit and engaging with NGOs that work towards its elimination. Making parallel efforts like the government's child marriage act, Save the Children India has supported villages in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana to tackle the issue of child marriage. Would you want to do the same? Join us today! The seemingly most vulnerable gender has faced abuse in many ways. Every day, we hear gruesome cases of heinous crimes committed against women, especially the girl child. Girl child abuse could include corporal, sexual, or emotional exploitation or disregard of a child or children, particularly by a parent or a guardian. It is sad to note that child abuse could comprise of any act or failure to act by a parent or a guardian. This can be because of rejection – corporeal and psychology, and it results in actual or potential harm to a child. It can occur in a child's home or organizations, schools, or communities that the child interacts in. It is heartbreaking to also know, from various statistics, that most abuse happens in familiar places by known people.
Girl child abuse takes place because of many interconnected reasons. These are deeply ingrained patriarchal systems, a continuation of traditions and age-old practices that classify the girl child as inferior to the male child. It is the gender-biased and intolerant approach that treats the female children as a burden/liability due to widespread illiteracy, poverty, and harmful parenting patterns. The other factors comprise of the low position of women, the dwindling human and religious values, and the increase of consumerism and other such vices. The girl child is also subjected to horrors like female infanticide, feticide, arduous household work, untimely marriage, and childbearing, overlooking and denial of healthy living conditions, sexual abuse, prostitution, rape, and rejection of their right to safety. The establishment of an impartial and democratic world order becomes increasingly customary for the girl child. An all-inclusive movement is required to fights gender-based disparity, intolerance, mistreatment, repression, violence, brutality, callous ethics, and defiance of basic human rights, particularly girl child abuse. People must fundamentally alter their regressive attitudes and behaviour towards the girl child from being looked at as a commodity or sex-object to 'a worthy human being, an equal, an individual to be loved, respected, and cared for.' There are umpteen child help foundations across the globe that work towards this goal, but Save the Children stands as one of the most celebrated foundations that work tirelessly for the betterment of children, especially against girl child abuse. Child help foundations like these, have ensured that all children, no matter who they are, have a right to lead a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life. Save the Children was established in 1919 with a vision – 'Build a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development, and participation.' Save the Children is one of India's most trusted NGOs for the protection of the rights of children. It runs various social outreach programs in various states and strives to create awareness about children's rights. Save the Children works tirelessly to root out numerous social evils from society such as poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy, child labour, child trafficking, and child marriage. This NGO also seeks to eradicate the barbaric and horrifying practice of female foeticide from society. The prevention of female foeticide is a priority for the government of India.
Female foeticide refers to the practice of killing the female foetus within the womb of the mother itself. Unfortunately, the practice of female foeticide is still quite rampant in India, and therefore there is a great need for the prevention of female foeticide. As per the 2011 Population Census, the child sex ratio was 918:1000; clearly in favor of the male child. Therefore the prevention of female foeticide is necessary to balance the population demographics as well. Traditionally, India has always been a strongly patriarchal society. There has always been an immense value placed on the male child, whereas the female child has always been considered 'less valuable' in many communities. Save the Children works in collaboration with various civic bodies to implement child protection policies and uphold the rights of all children. Child protection policies refer to the policies which are formulated to protect children from various kinds of risks and harm. There have been several legal measures imposed by the government to ensure the prevention of female foeticide. Although it is a decriminalized practice in India, cases of female foeticide still take place throughout the country. The male child is always more desired than the female child in India. Girls continue to face deep-rooted gender bias and discrimination throughout their lives in this country. Women and young females are the targets of harassment, abuse, and violence in all spheres of life. There is a need to fight the mindset that the female child is not as 'valuable' as the male child. The prevention of female foeticide always been an essential goal for the Government of India. Girls continue to remain vulnerable to harm and gender bias in India. There is a prevalent and incorrect notion that girls are 'financial burdens', and that they have limited earning potential as compared to boys. The prevention of female foeticide, therefore, proves to be a challenging owing to the regressive mindset of the Indian society.
